The original Death Note Japanese manga series concerns a gifted high school student, Light Yamagi (aka Kira), who uses a supernatural book in an attempt to fight the world's evil. This notebook causes the death of anyone whose name is written in it. Two movies have been made from this manga, and there is an anime series as well as a video game.

Main characters include the student, Light Yagami, known as Kira to the police. His girlfriend Misa Amane, the detective known as L, the chocolate-eating Mello, the quirky Near, and the Death Spirits Ryuk (aka Ryuku) and Rem.
